Contract to construct new boardwalk for Boyle
Greenway to be awarded shortly
Roscommon/South Leitrim TD, Frank Feighan, has said
that the contract to construct a boardwalk linking Knockvicar and Lough Key
Forest Park as part of the new Boyle Greenway will be awarded shortly.
“This boardwalk is part of the first phase of the
overall project and will form a significant part of the greenway, which will be
both a cycleway and walkway.
“I understand that the contract to construct this
boardwalk development, linking the Knockvicar area to Lough Key Forest Park,
will be awarded by the end of the month.
“I was delighted last year to help secure €400,000
funding for the whole greenway project which will also provide for a cycle link
between Lough Key Forest Park and the town of Boyle.
“Part of the plan is to integrate the cycle route
with popular boating holidays on the River Shannon which the route crosses at
three locations.
“I have no doubt that the Boyle Greenway will
unlock the tourism potential of smaller villages along the route such as
Knockvicar and Keadue along with developing links to the Arigna Mining
Experience.
"Cycling tourism is big business globally and
we have seen the huge economic impact that the Mayo Greenway has had on the
local economy. The Boyle Greenway is clear proof of how these projects can open
rural Ireland to more visitors, boost local economies and generate local
jobs."
