€706,000 in Sports Funding

€706,000 in sports funding for clubs and organisations in Roscommon and Leitrim – Feighan

Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim, Frank Feighan, has said that total funding of €706,317 for sports clubs and organisations in Roscommon and Leitrim is great news and a great boost for local communities.
“I am delighted that 25 clubs and organisations across Roscommon and Leitrim have been rewarded for their efforts in promoting the benefits of sport in their local communities. I am delighted to have been able to assist these beneficiaries in securing this funding.
“In total, funding of more than €41 million is being made available to clubs and local organisations around the country under the Sports Capital Programme 2015, announced by Minister of State Michael Ring today.
“It is very welcome that once again, Sports Capital funding is being provided to clubs and local organisations here in this constituency and around the country.
“The economic recovery allowed this Government to re-instate the Sports Capital Programme, after it was closed by Fianna Fáil during the recession. We understand the importance of sport to communities around the country and the imperative to fund it. Money spent on sport, is money saved on healthcare down the road. According to the Department of Sport, 90% of Sports Capital recipients say it has helped them to increase the numbers of people involved in sport.
“Fine Gael is keenly aware of the impact the economic downturn has had on communities throughout Ireland and we are working to ensure that the economic recovery spreads to all parts of Ireland. This Government is committed to supporting local communities, with actions and funding like these Sports Capital grants.”

McAleese Collection at King House being launched on Oct 16th will prove to be major visitor attraction. Roscommon/South Leitrim Fine Gael TD, Frank Feighan, has said the McAleese Collection to be launched on Friday, October 16th at King House will prove to be a major visitor attraction for Boyle.

"President Mary McAleese has donated more than 60 gifts to the State she received during her 14 years in office. Many of those items were presented by Heads of State from around the world, including Barack Obama and Yasser Arafat. To have some of these presentations now on permanent display at King House in Boyle will certainly prove to be a major attraction for visitors at home and abroad. Undoubtedly, the collection will enhance the visitor experience at King House.

I’m delighted to have been able help to secure this McAleese collection for Boyle and I would like to sincerely thank staff at Roscommon County Council and at King House for their work in organising this wonderful showcase." Contact: Deputy Feighan, (086) 833 1234

Boyle Greenway

September 23rd 2015

Contract to construct new boardwalk for Boyle Greenway to be awarded shortly

Roscommon/South Leitrim TD, Frank Feighan, has said that the contract to construct a boardwalk linking Knockvicar and Lough Key Forest Park as part of the new Boyle Greenway will be awarded shortly.

“This boardwalk is part of the first phase of the overall project and will form a significant part of the greenway, which will be both a cycleway and walkway.

“I understand that the contract to construct this boardwalk development, linking the Knockvicar area to Lough Key Forest Park, will be awarded by the end of the month.

“I was delighted last year to help secure €400,000 funding for the whole greenway project which will also provide for a cycle link between Lough Key Forest Park and the town of Boyle.

“Part of the plan is to integrate the cycle route with popular boating holidays on the River Shannon which the route crosses at three locations.

“I have no doubt that the Boyle Greenway will unlock the tourism potential of smaller villages along the route such as Knockvicar and Keadue along with developing links to the Arigna Mining Experience.

"Cycling tourism is big business globally and we have seen the huge economic impact that the Mayo Greenway has had on the local economy. The Boyle Greenway is clear proof of how these projects can open rural Ireland to more visitors, boost local economies and generate local jobs."

Rural areas in Roscommon to benefit from broadband expansion - Feighan

Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim, Frank Feighan, has welcomed eircom’s announcement that they are to significantly expand access to high speed fibre broadband in rural Ireland benefiting a number of areas in County Roscommon.
In Roscommon, high-speed broadband will be expanded to Ballyforan, Ballyfarnan, Croghan, Cootehall, Emoo Junction, Four Roads, Knockcroghery and Taughmaconnell. This expanded footprint means eircom will invest €400 million in fibre over the next five years, hugely benefiting families and business in the county.
“The National Broadband Plan is a partnership between the commercial sector and the State to deliver high speed broadband to every home, school and business in Ireland. The Government has played a major role in creating the conditions for accelerated telecoms investment by highlighting to broadband providers the potential profit to be made by expanding into rural areas and by securing commitments from them to invest. Today’s investment is a clear indication that eircom recognises the opportunities in this market.

“Making the economic recovery a reality for people in all parts of the country, is a key objective for Government. Lack of broadband has been a long standing issue in rural Ireland and one that had not been addressed by previous Governments. Initial commercial plans to provide high-speed access to one million homes by 2015 have now expanded into a commitment to provide access to 1.6 million homes by the end of 2016, and 1.9 million homes by 2020.

“Eircom’s announcement means the element of the National Broadband Plan that requires State intervention is likely to reduce significantly.

“The Minister for Communications, Alex White is expected to publish the State intervention strategy in July with a view to moving to formal procurement by the end of this year.  Roll-out will commence in 2016.”

Beef Data and Genomics scheme

Feighan to meet Minister Coveney to discuss concerns over Beef Data and Genomics scheme

Roscommon/South Leitrim Fine Gael TD, Frank Feighan, is to meet Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, on Tuesday next, May 26th to discuss farmers’ concerns over the new Beef Data and Genomics programme.
“I will be among a number of Fine Gael TDs who will meet Minister Coveney in Leinster House to discuss issues which have emerged in relation to the operation of the scheme.
“While everyone welcomes the move to improve the genetic quality of the beef herd and the €300m investment in the suckler herd, farmers are expressing significant concerns about the workings of the scheme.
“Clear issues have arisen around the mandatory six year contract requirement and the scheme’s general complexity, including the star ratings element. It is important that all of these issues are sufficiently addressed in order to give farmers the confidence to buy into the scheme.
“I also hope that any concerns about the lack of consultation will be looked as it is important there is full clarity and certainty for farmers in order they can give this programme the vote of confidence.”

Fall in unemployment rate

Press Statement
May 22nd 2015

Feighan welcomes fall in unemployment rate to below 10%

Roscommon/South Leitrim Fine Gael TD, Frank Feighan, has welcome confirmation from the CSO that the unemployment rate has fallen below 10% for the first time in 7 years.
“This fall below the 10% figure is a significant milestone given that at the height of the recession, the unemployment figure stood at more than 15%.
“At the same time, we know some regions are growing faster than others and that is why this Government is putting in place the €250m Regional Action Plan for Jobs to accelerate jobs growth in every region.

“By the second half of the year we will have specific Action Plans for each of the 8 regions, backed up by extra Government funding and coordinated by Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland. This will build on the strengths of each individual region and accelerate the jobs growth in each region.

“The priority now is to ensure that the economic recovery is felt in every corner of the country and positive change can be expected in all regions of the country over the coming months.
“I warmly welcome the news that unemployment level has fallen below 10% and I feel encouraged by the fact that our young people are getting back to work and that those who have been stuck in the welfare trap are entering the labour market.”
